Member’s contacts are generically called “friends”.  Friends can comment on each other’s photos and identify (tag) people in the photos.

The status update is probably the most important part of Facebook. It is a microblogging feature. It allows members to broadcast recent happenings, feelings or news to their friends. Friends would see all interactions in real time on their news feed.

Members can change their privacy settings.  This means you can make all your communications visible to everyone. You can make certain updates private or visible to specific people. And you can keep all his communications private.

Members can choose whether or not to be searchable, decide which parts of their profile are public, decide what not to put in their news feed and determine exactly who can see their posts.

There is an email-like private message feature to communicate directly with friends. Here is how it looks.

Members can also receive notifications when others update their profiles. Updating your profile could mean adding a new photo, video or change of relationship status amongst other things.

Additionally, members can join group containing people of similar interest or passion. These groups are organized by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics.

Also Members can complain or block unpleasant people.

As of the fourth quarter of 2015, Facebook had 1.59 billion monthly active users.

How it started?

Facebook was launched on February 4, 2004. The founder is Mark Zuckerberg alongside his Harvard College roommates and fellow students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.

They had initially limited the website’s membership to Harvard students. They later expanded it to colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University.

It gradually added support for students at various other universities and later to high-school students. Since 2006, anyone who is at least 13 years old was allowed to become a registered user of the website, though the age requirement may be higher depending on applicable local laws. Its name comes from the face book directories often given to American university students- wikipedia

Various features

Let’s delve a little bit more into the features of Facebook.

Facebook wall

A Facebook wall is the space on a profile or page where friends and “fans” can post their thoughts, views, or criticisms for everyone to see.

Walls have three viewing settings: Public, Friends and Only me. These settings can be changed by clicking the “filters” option at the bottom of the wall.

Most walls automatically display public option showing posts, links, tagged material, and other information posted by both the page’s operator and their friends or fans.

Just below the Wall is the news feed. The news feed displays updates made by the members; updates such as statuses, links, pictures, and other recent activity.

You can respond directly back to a friend using the “wall-to-wall” mode. There are variations of the wall available to Facebook users by installing Facebook applications, like “Super Wall”. These types of applications will offer features and options not found in the standard Facebook wall.

Facebook answers more frequently asked questions about wall on their website.

The News feed

News Feed is the constantly updating list of stories in the middle of your home page. News Feed includes status updates, photos, videos, links, app activity and likes from people, Pages and groups that you follow on Facebook.

The Like button

With the Facebook “Like” button, members can show their support for specific comments, pictures, wall posts, statuses, or fan pages. It was added in February 2009.

This feature allows members to show their appreciation for content without having to make a written comment.

In the past, this feature only gave members opportunity to “become a fan” of them. Facebook replaced it with a “like” button in April 2010.

If a member “likes” something, their news feed is updated. This let their friends know what pages they “like.” Now, it is possible for web sites to add “like” buttons directly to their sites.

If a user clicks a “like” button on a web page, their news feed will be updated with a link to the web page.

A “Like Box” also allows Facebook page owners to see how many users and which of their friends like the page. The ability to like users’ comments was added in June 2010.

Facebook describes “liking” as a way for users to “give positive feedback and connect with things they care about.”

The Comment button

This gives members the opportunity to share your view or say something about a particular post. You can comment to a video, Photo and text of a person directly or within a group or a page. See example below:

Facebook shares more about comment basics and much more on their page.

Share a post

As the word implies, the “Share” button allows the members to share the current page link to their wall. This is like pasting the link of the content to your wall.

Facebook will then retrieve images from the link and turn it into a snippet entry in your wall. With Facebook Share, all your friends will be able to see the snippet in their news feed.

Before the “Like” button even exists, the only way to get your post shared across the Facebook network is via the “Share” button.

Facebook search

This gives you the chance to browse for your preferred interests and topics as well as connect with people. Facebook would give you suggestions and results based on the following categories:

  • Top
  • Latest
  • People
  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Pages
  • Places
  • Groups
  • Apps
  • Events.

Facebook gives more insights and even more detailed explanation about the search bar on their website.

Facebook group

Facebook Groups are pages created within the Facebook. They are based around a real-life interest, passion, and group or to declare an affiliation or association with people, business brands and things.

With a Facebook Group, you are creating a community of people and friends to promote, share and discuss relevant topics.

Members can join the group and post their thoughts on a wall and interact through discussion threads.

While Facebook groups were the main way for businesses to bring users together and have discussions for many years, the introduction of fan pages (which later became “like” pages in 2007) changed this.

Facebook Page

Groups and pages are similar but give businesses and organizations different ways of reaching their audience.

Mainly, fan pages have the advantage of being able to display information directly into their fans’ news feeds, while groups cannot.

Facebook Crash Course, Beginners guide to facebook, twitter, instagram, social media, Mark Zuckerberg, Digital marketing agency

Pages also tend to have higher Search Engine Optimization (SEO) opportunities than groups. Groups, however, have the ability to message their members, as well as restrict who can and cannot join.

Check Facebook website for the difference between group and page.

Most business, brands or artiste have fan pages rather than a group. They use this to engage their audience, turn some into leads and communicate recent updates about the brand.

Don’t be left out

Facebook has changed the definition of friends. The definition of share and like now carries more weight. Obama used the instrumentality of Facebook to win his election.

With Facebook, you are now one click away from the person you’ll like to meet. Artist and brands on Facebook increase their reach and audience via this platform.

While it is true that some endlessly waste time on the platform, it is also true that it has affected individuals and businesses. It even created jobs for social media managers.
