2. Search Engine Optimization
SEO! SEO!
All you hear when you ask someone about SEO is KEYWORD!!
SEO isn’t a keyword, clear that myth… SEO means “Search Engine Optimization”.
And what that really means is optimisation tips and tactics for search engines – how well to grow your traffic and enhance your website and content for search engine visibility.
As I said, SEO isn’t a keyword, it doesn’t entirely mean we should ignore keywords when talking about SEO.
In fact, when you do proper keyword research, you stand a better chance of ranking above your competitors for that specific keyword you want to rank for.
Keyword research is an important attribute for anyone who claims to be an SEO expert. You should listen to this podcast I shared below, it discusses keyword research to grow your business.
According to Webopedia, Search engine optimization is a methodology of strategies, techniques, and tactics used to increase the number of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) — including Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines.
As an online marketer, do I need SEO Skills for my business?
Yes, obviously you do.
Looking at the image shared by QuickSprout, you’d realise 93% of online experiences begin with a search engine. Search Engine Optimization skill is, in fact, one of the most important aspects of digital marketing.
Here”s why.
To see why SEO is so powerful. To spotlight the role it can play in marketing and communicating, SearchEngineLand published an article – “List of reasons why you need Search Engine Optimization“, but I’m just going to pick out a few pointers for you.
- SEO will help people find your website: Your website is the first point of contact with your audience online. It can generate leads and attract potential new customers, partners or investors. But this only happens when people can find you online. Effective SEO can get your site on Google’s first page.
- SEO is not a cost but an investment: An investment is something that would appreciate over time and most probably, pay you BIG. This is simply SEO, it doesn’t require monetary input like advertising and email marketing. It’s a long time investment that will yield and give you a reasonable amount of organic traffic.
- SEO is a crucial part of your marketing mix: If you’ve been following my posts here on the Digital Marketing Skill Institute blog, you’ll already know that I’m clear about the importance of SEO for marketing any business.
- SEO pricing is variable: There are no universal standards by which you can fix a ‘rate card’ for SEO services. Keyword analysis, link building and other SEO activities are unique, customised and tailored differently for specific situations.
- SEO Keeps You From Missing Out On Free Advertising: SEO lets you dictate how your business should be featured on search results. SEO helps you get your site visitors for free, if you are not engaging in SEO, then you’re letting a wonderful chance to get free advertising slip through your fingers.
- SEO Leverages Social Sharing: Are you engaged in social media like Facebook? SEO plays an important role here. Content shared by users on social networks is directly related to SEO-specific parameters like title tags and meta descriptions. This is what you see when people share posts and stories on their Wall, Google+ profile, or in a tweet or share.
Now that you know how important SEO skills is, do you know what kind of skills Search Engine Optimizers really need in today’s marketplace?
Should SEOs be trimmed into doing basic SEO and shut themselves out from other online marketing skills? Do you just want to focus on being a master of a specific type of SEO or a master of all?
Well, when it comes to the SEO skills you need as a digital marketer, here are the various types of SEO skills that you need to master to be a pro.
5 important SEO skills you need to have as an SEO expert
SEO is about making websites better at both the page and server level in a structured way.
# Technical SEO: If you think Search Engine Optimization is only about keywords, then be ready to be surprised.SEO isn’t just about stuffing your keywords in your content, there is a technical aspect of SEO you may need to know. SEO is about making websites better at both the page and server level in a structured way to enhance their chances of being found on search engines, with the eventual goal of generating traffic and conversion.
You need to understand the technicalities when it comes to optimising your page for search engine traffic. To make your site appear on Google and other search engines, you need to know that a site must have been verified, submitted and crawled by webmasters. Fortunately, our training syllabus covers Technical SEO, you will learn to be a guru in it.
# Social Media Marketing: Social media is not a joke anymore, gone are the days when people only used Facebook, Twitter and the likes to keep in touch with families and friends. Social media marketing is a hot cake and this has been highlighted in one my previous articles on this site.
Social bakers stats revealed that Facebook gets over 1.7 billion active monthly visitors and about 1.1 million active daily visitors. And Twitter is getting over 313 million monthly active users and 500 million tweets per day, isn’t this awesome?
Are you having goosebumps already? This is just another aspect of digital marketing of its own, the stats above highlight how busy the social sphere is lately. Social media marketing can be used as a means to reach a targeted audience and in turn, grow your customer base, generate more leads and increase sales. I’ll be more elaborate as you read on.
# Link Building: An SEO expert that doesn’t understand the importance of link building is a long from being called a complete SEO strategist. With the rise in social media activities, link-building has grown tremendously.
According to WordStream, Link building (alternative spellings include link building and link-building) refers to the process of getting external pages to link to a page on your website. It is one of the many tactics used in search engine optimisation (SEO).
Google uses this tactic to rank a site on a Search engine based on the PR (Page Rank) of the site linking to your site. If you are getting links to your website content from high-authority sites, then it shows your site is credible and that can, in turn, be a metric to move your website up the ladder.
# Usability & Information Architecture: According to SearchEngineWatch, SEOs should value the importance of good site usability. Site usability implies how your objects are placed on your page if the information you provide on your site is useful for the users and if your site is easy to use and navigate.
Learning about information architecture is critical as well since it’s all about how you organise content on your site, decide on your folder structure, and how you label elements on your site. This is often an area where SEOs make mistakes especially when they take a keyword approach to IA.
Again, as competition increases and the attention span of users decreases, it’s important to not let your visitors drop off your site.
# Content Marketing: Content marketing is the real deal when it comes to marketing online. Content marketing gets you the visitors or leads you’re looking for. The modern-day SEO specialist must understand everything when it comes to content marketing. This marketing skill is going to be explained below.
If you have not made up your mind to get the required digital SEO skill, I think you should by now.
We will equip you with the core understanding, technical know-how and insight to build and implement an SEO strategy that dramatically improves any website position and ranking with the most popular search engines. SEO is about attracting the right customers at the right time.

Content marketing has been misunderstood with blogging, and Ryan Davies gave a proper insight into the differences between blogging and content marketing.
Blogging and Content Marketing are two different forms of branded content every modern day digital marketing should have, but they aren’t the same par say. They both have a ripple effect when communicating with customers. Blogging is the act of running a blog.

Digital Marketing Skill Gap
I am sure you’ve heard of the digital marketing skill gap.
It has been written about in hubspot blog and marketingtechnews, the truth is there is a blatant huge digital marketing skill gap in the industry and this often becomes very difficult in implementing your digital marketing plans for your business goals.
If your online business doesn’t have enough talent and skill in the digital marketing niche, it may become one of the major reasons why your marketing strategy doesn’t work.
What is the Digital Marketing skill gap?
“A skill gap is a difference between the skills required to complete a certain task and the actual skills possessed by the employee in person.”
As an entrepreneur, I wish that I had learnt digital marketing before getting into my first online business.
I founded digitalmarketingskill.com (formally vibewebsolutions.com) in 2012, in my bedroom with just a laptop, a sofa, a bed and an internet connection during my Master’s at the University of Portsmouth in the UK.
Before I started my digital marketing consulting firm, I teamed up with my flatmate to start an online hotel booking business.
I lost all my savings from a summer internship I did to a digital marketing firm that drove little or no results for the online business.
I became so broke and frustrated that I took matters into my own hands and decided to learn digital marketing. So, I read all the books, blogs and watched all the videos I could get my hands on.
Then I got to testing.
A lot of the things I tried failed, however, I just kept going.
I didn’t want to give up.
Eventually, I started getting traffic, converting the traffic to sales and retaining more customers.
I became obsessed and passionate about digital marketing as I started getting clients in different countries and continents.
Now, my goal is to help and empower 10,000 people in the next 5 years to succeed in their businesses or career using smart digital marketing skills, channels and strategies.
I hope you understand my short story, digital marketing is no overnight success, it’s hard work, consistency and dedication. It’s obvious I had wasted my money by giving my online booking business to a set of digital marketers who drove no result because they probably aren’t good at the profession.
What digital marketers don’t know is, that they have been hit hard by a growing list of people who don’t believe in their capabilities as digital marketers. When you ask them to rank themselves, they tend to give themselves very poor ranks which don’t speak well of their capability as digital marketers.
They asked 1,100 digital marketers to rank themselves on a 100-point Digital Capabilities Index (with 100 indicating best practice). Shockingly, the average digital marketer ranked themselves at a 57 which is very low.
Among other benefits you’d get when you discover your weakness:
- It will give you more job security.
- It will make you more hireable.
- It will improve your credibility and confidence.
-
It will make you an A-level digital marketer.
